“An intimate women's liberal arts college in Missouri dedicated to developing confident leaders through personalized scholarship.”
Cottey College is an independent, liberal arts and sciences women's college founded in 1884 in Nevada, Missouri. Since 1927, Cottey has been owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic women's organization, which ensures the college remains tuition-affordable and mission-focused on empowering women through education. For most of its history Cottey offered a two-year associate degree program; in 2011 it achieved accreditation as a four-year baccalaureate-granting institution, now offering 15 bachelor's degrees alongside its traditional associate programs in Arts, Music, and Science. With an extraordinary student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1 and an average class size of just 8, Cottey delivers a genuinely personalized academic experience that is rare among American colleges. Students work closely with faculty mentors on research, leadership development, and community engagement. The college's mission is explicitly centered on women's leadership and intellectual growth, and its graduates enter graduate school, public service, and the professions with unusual confidence and preparation. For nine consecutive years through 2026, US News has ranked Cottey in the top 10 Regional Colleges Midwest, including a #2 ranking for Best Undergraduate Teaching. Located on 66 acres in Nevada, Missouri, a small town of roughly 8,000 residents about 90 miles south of Kansas City, Cottey's campus offers a safe, supportive residential community. International students are welcomed with structured admissions support and limited but available financial aid. The P.E.O. Sisterhood's global network provides graduates with connections to professional women leaders around the world, enhancing Cottey's value far beyond what its size would suggest.
