Voorhees University is a private historically black university founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee in Denmark, South Carolina. Affiliated with the Episcopal Church and a proud member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Voorhees has spent over a century preparing students for professional careers and leadership across its 365-acre rural campus in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Founded just three decades after the Civil War, the institution reflects the determination of Black educators and community leaders to create pathways to higher education in a region where access was systematically denied, making it one of the most historically significant HBCUs in the Southeast. Academically, Voorhees University offers 18 undergraduate programs and graduate concentrations in education, organized across four schools: Business and Entrepreneurship, Humanities Education and Social Sciences, Science Technology Health and Human Services, and the W. Franklin Evans Honors College. With a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students receive a level of individual attention rarely found at larger universities.
