“Alabama's aerospace and defense research university, nestled among NASA, the Army, and Huntsville's Rocket City tech corridor.”
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is a public research university in Huntsville, Alabama — the "Rocket City" that has been home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and a national hub for aerospace and defense engineering since the Apollo era. Founded in 1950 as a University of Alabama extension center explicitly to serve the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and Wernher von Braun's rocket team, UAH became an autonomous campus in 1969 and today enrolls roughly 10,000 students across eight colleges with a Carnegie R1 research designation. UAH is best known for engineering, computer science, atmospheric science, astrophysics, and cybersecurity. The College of Engineering — the university's largest college — offers programs in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, computer, civil, chemical, industrial, and systems engineering, all of which enjoy deep research ties to NASA Marshall, the Missile Defense Agency, and the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command. The College of Nursing is the largest single major by enrollment and is consistently ranked among the top public nursing programs in the Southeast. UAH is a Space Grant university, holds a top-10 ranking nationally for federal defense research expenditures, and operates a cybersecurity research center with NSA-approved credentials. Student life at UAH blends the feel of a mid-sized commuter-friendly public university with a Southern aerospace industry town. The 500-acre campus sits adjacent to Cummings Research Park — the second-largest research park in the United States and fourth-largest in the world — giving students direct access to Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Blue Origin, Dynetics, and hundreds of other defense and tech employers. NCAA Division II Chargers athletics, an active student government, more than 200 student organizations, and growing on-campus housing contribute to a close-knit community. For international students, UAH offers affordable out-of-state tuition relative to flagship peers, almost universally STEM-designated STEM OPT programs, and one of the most hireable regional economies in the United States for STEM graduates.
