Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) is a private research university on Florida's Space Coast in Melbourne, founded in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College to serve early NASA and missile-program engineers at nearby Cape Canaveral. Today Florida Tech is the only independent, technology-focused research university in the Southeast, enrolling roughly 9,000 students across its colleges of Engineering & Science, Aeronautics, Psychology & Liberal Arts, and Business. The institution styles itself as "Florida's STEM University" and its curriculum, research centers, and campus culture are built squarely around science, engineering, and aerospace. Florida Tech's academic identity is inseparable from its proximity to Kennedy Space Center, Patrick Space Force Base, and a dense cluster of aerospace and defense employers including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris. The College of Engineering & Science houses ABET-accredited programs in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, computer, ocean, civil, and biomedical engineering, and the College of Aeronautics operates its own fleet of training aircraft at Melbourne Orlando International Airport. Nearly all undergraduate degrees are STEM-designated for OPT purposes. About one in six Florida Tech students is international, drawn from more than 100 countries, making it one of the most globally diverse private universities in the U.S. The 130-acre main campus sits along Crane Creek in Melbourne, a small city with year-round warm weather, beach access fifteen minutes away, and the Orlando theme-park corridor an hour inland. Students engage in NCAA Division II athletics, a CCC-affiliated Panthers identity, and more than 120 clubs including robotics, rocketry, and multiple cultural organizations.
