“America's premier HBCU liberal arts college for women, forging generations of Black women leaders in STEM, the arts, and public life.”
Spelman College, founded in 1881 in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, is the nation's most celebrated Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and a defining institution in the education of Black women. Named the #1 HBCU by U.S. News & World Report for an extraordinary 19th consecutive year, Spelman is also ranked #1 in Newsweek's inaugural Best Colleges for Women. Situated on a beautifully maintained 39-acre gated campus in southwest Atlanta, Spelman is a founding member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC) — a collaborative of six HBCUs including Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University — giving students access to the course offerings, social life, and resources of an entire university ecosystem while maintaining an intimate liberal arts environment. Spelman is the nation's leading producer of Black women who go on to complete doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This extraordinary STEM legacy exists alongside robust programs in the humanities, social sciences, arts, and health professions. The college's curriculum spans 30+ majors including data science, documentary filmmaking, international studies, computer science, biochemistry, and political science. Class sizes are intimate, research opportunities are abundant, and Spelman's faculty are deeply invested in the intellectual and professional development of every student. The college's historic commitment to "the whole person" — mind, body, and spirit — remains the animating force of a Spelman education. Campus life at Spelman is defined by sisterhood, tradition, and the extraordinary advantages of studying in Atlanta. Students at Spelman benefit from proximity to one of America's most dynamic cities, with unmatched access to internships, Fortune 500 employers, federal agencies, arts institutions, and a vibrant Black professional community. On campus, traditions including the Ring Ceremony, the iconic Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert (a beloved Atlanta tradition since 1925), and the formal White Attire ceremonies create a powerful sense of belonging and collective identity. Spelman's graduates have distinguished themselves in medicine, science, law, government, arts, and business — producing alumni who change the world.
