“The nation's premier liberal arts college for Black men — the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a top-three HBCU.”
Morehouse College is the nation's only historically Black liberal arts college for men, founded in 1867 by William Jefferson White in Augusta, Georgia, just two years after the American Civil War ended the enslavement of African-Americans. The institution relocated to Atlanta in 1879, adopting the name Atlanta Baptist Seminary, then Atlanta Baptist College in 1897, and finally Morehouse College in 1913. Today its 66-acre campus sits at the heart of the Atlanta University Center — the world's largest consortium of HBCUs — in downtown Atlanta, embedded within one of the most consequential centers of Black intellectual, cultural, and political life in America. Morehouse has produced more Black men holding bachelor's degrees than any other institution in the nation. Its alumni include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., filmmaker Spike Lee, Academy Award winner Samuel L. Jackson, civil rights leader Julian Bond, former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward Kennedy Ellington Jr., and Olympic gold medalist Edwin Moses. The college offers 33 majors across seven academic divisions — from software engineering to Journalism in Sports, Culture, and Justice — with especially strong programs in business, economics, biological sciences, social sciences, and philosophy. U.S. News & World Report 2026 ranked Morehouse #96 among National Liberal Arts Colleges and #3 among HBCUs, continuing its ascent in both liberal arts and historically Black institution rankings. Campus life at Morehouse is shaped by the Morehouse Brotherhood — a culture of accountability, scholarship, and service rooted in Dr. Benjamin E. Mays's dictum that a man must be prepared to lead. Students participate in Crown Forum (the weekly assembly tradition), compete in Division II athletics as the Maroon Tigers (SIAC Conference), and engage with partner Spelman College across the street for the largest HBCU co-educational experience in the country. Atlanta itself — home to Delta, Coca-Cola, CNN, and one of the largest Black professional and political communities in America — provides unmatched internship, cultural, and mentorship opportunities for every Morehouse Man.
