“Central Arkansas's historic HBCU dedicated to social justice, academic excellence, and community transformation since 1877.”
Philander Smith University, founded in 1877 as Walden Seminary to provide education for emancipated slaves west of the Mississippi River, is one of America's oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Renamed in 1882 in honor of Adeline Smith's contributions in memory of her husband Philander Smith, the institution was chartered as a four-year college in 1883 and awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1888. In 2023 the college added its first graduate program—an MBA—and elevated to university status, becoming the only HBCU in Central Arkansas with a graduate degree program. Today PSU enrolls approximately 755 undergraduate students on a compact 9-acre urban campus in Little Rock with a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, fostering exceptionally close academic relationships. Philander Smith University is organized into five academic divisions—Arts and Humanities, Business Administration, Education and General Education, Natural and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences—offering 21 undergraduate majors. Popular programs include Business Administration, Biology, and Criminal Justice. The university social justice mission is woven throughout the curriculum, emphasizing civic engagement, community service, and leadership development as core graduate outcomes. PSU is ranked among the top 25 institutions nationally for Social Mobility by US News (2026), reflecting its success in transforming students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds into productive community leaders. The Philander Smith Management Institute offers an 18-month continuing education program for working professionals. Campus life at PSU is animated by strong HBCU tradition: the Panthers compete in the NAIA HBCU Athletic Conference, and student organizations including the Student Government Association, Panther Programming Council, and Panther Dolls contribute to a vibrant co-curricular culture. Little Rock as Arkansas's capital city provides students with direct access to state government internships, the Clinton Presidential Center, and the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site—a civil rights landmark that deeply informs PSU's institutional identity and social justice curriculum.
