Excelsior University is a private nonprofit online university headquartered in Albany, New York, and an institution of the University of the State of New York. Founded in 1971 by the New York State Board of Regents as the Regents External Degree Program — later renamed Regents College, then Excelsior College in 2001, and Excelsior University in 2022 — the institution was a pioneer in recognizing learning gained outside traditional classroom settings. Funded initially by major grants from the Ford Foundation and Carnegie Corporation, Excelsior was among the first U.S. universities to develop fully online instruction in the early 2000s. Today, Excelsior enrolls approximately 12,700 students and has produced more than 200,000 graduates — a milestone celebrated in 2025. The university offers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs primarily online across business, health sciences, nursing, technology, liberal arts, and public service. Excelsior particularly serves military personnel, working adults, veterans, and career changers who require flexible, self-paced pathways to degree completion. The college is nationally recognized for its strong return on investment: ten years after enrollment, median graduate earnings reach $78,493, demonstrating the tangible career impact of an Excelsior degree.
