“A Lutheran liberal arts college in the Red River Valley — home of the world-renowned Concordia Choir and one of the most affordable private LACs in the Midwest.”
Concordia College is a private liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) located in Moorhead, Minnesota, directly across the Red River from Fargo, North Dakota. Founded in 1891 by a small group of Norwegian Lutheran pastors and laymen recently settled in the Red River Valley, Concordia was envisioned as an institution serving both the faith and intellectual life of Scandinavian immigrant communities on the northern Great Plains. Today the college enrolls approximately 1,864 students across more than 60 majors and 12 pre-professional programs, with a student-faculty ratio of 12:1 that ensures close faculty mentorship throughout the undergraduate years. Concordia is nationally recognized above all for its extraordinary choral tradition: the Concordia Choir, shaped over decades by distinguished conductors including the legendary Paul J. Christiansen, has toured internationally and is regarded as one of the finest college choirs in the world. The music department draws outstanding performers and contributes a uniquely vibrant arts dimension to campus life. Beyond music, Concordia's most popular programs include business, education, communication studies, biology, and nursing, while strong foreign language offerings and a culture of global engagement encourage study abroad participation across more than 140 partner programs worldwide. The Fargo-Moorhead metro area is a thriving regional economy of over 250,000 anchored in healthcare, technology, agriculture, and financial services. At $31,600 in 2025-26 tuition — among the lowest for comparable private liberal arts colleges — and with institutional aid that substantially reduces average net cost, Concordia offers an unusually accessible path to a rigorous, residential, faith-informed liberal arts education.
