“A small, welcoming Christian liberal arts college on the Minnesota River bluffs, known for outsized support of international students.”
Bethany Lutheran College (BLC) is a private Christian liberal arts college perched on a scenic bluff overlooking the Minnesota River valley in Mankato, a community of roughly 53,000 people about 80 miles southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Founded in 1927 and operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, Bethany grew out of the earlier Bethany Ladies College (founded 1911) and served as a two-year junior college for most of the 20th century before transitioning to a baccalaureate institution in 2001. It has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1974 and today enrolls roughly 900 students, making it one of the most intimate four-year colleges in Minnesota. The academic experience is built around close faculty mentorship and small classes, with a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and 35 bachelor's majors spanning the liberal arts, professional fields, and a newly launched BSN in nursing. Popular programs include Business Administration, Exercise Physiology & Kinesiology, Elementary Education, Communication, Biology, Computer Science, Psychology, and Digital Media. Every major blends its subject matter with a core liberal arts and faith-informed curriculum, and upper-division coursework emphasizes practical application, internships, and undergraduate research. Bethany has become one of the most internationally oriented small colleges in the Upper Midwest: international enrollment surged 50% in 2025, with students now coming from around 35 countries and making up roughly 20% of the student body. New international arrivals are met at the airport, enter a three-week ENSL150 orientation course the August before classes begin, and receive dedicated ISSO mentoring. Over 95% of international students receive a renewable academic scholarship that typically brings all-in annual costs down to $18,000-$24,000. On campus life is warm and tradition-rich, with NCAA Division III Vikings athletics, three choirs, a chamber orchestra, theatre productions including the beloved "Theatre Physics" show, and 24+ student clubs.
