Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is a public comprehensive university located in Grand Junction, Colorado, the largest city on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains. Originally established in 1925 as Grand Junction Junior College, CMU grew through several name changes—Mesa Junior College, Mesa College, and Mesa State College—before becoming Colorado Mesa University in 2011. Today, CMU is the largest university in western Colorado, enrolling approximately 9,800 students in more than 140 undergraduate and graduate programs across its Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Hospitality, Education, Engineering and Computer Science, and Health Sciences. CMU's location in the Grand Valley, surrounded by dramatic canyon country, Colorado National Monument, and world-class outdoor recreation, gives it a distinctive identity as a university where academic and outdoor pursuits are deeply intertwined. The Mavericks athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), with strong programs in football, basketball, wrestling, and track and field. CMU is particularly noted for its applied science, criminal justice, business, nursing, and aviation programs. The university maintains strong community ties through workforce development partnerships with regional industries including energy, agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality. International students from 50+ countries enrich the campus, and the university offers a warm, outdoor-oriented campus experience in one of Colorado's most scenic regions.
