California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is a public regional university located in Bakersfield, California, the largest city in California's Central Valley. Established in 1965 as Kern State College and opening its doors in 1970, CSUB is a member of the California State University system and the youngest campus in the system's southern region. The university offers more than 60 bachelor's degree programs and 24 master's degree programs across four schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Public Administration, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Education. With an enrollment of approximately 9,800 students, CSUB is known for its student-centered learning environment, small class sizes, and commitment to serving the diverse agricultural and energy-producing communities of the San Joaquin Valley. The Roadrunners athletic teams—named after the speedy desert bird—compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Big West Conference, with programs in basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling. CSUB's beautiful campus features the Walter Stiern Library, the Todd Madigan Gallery, and the Contemplative Garden. The university has a strong commitment to first-generation college students and serves a majority-minority student population reflective of Kern County's diverse communities. CSUB graduates are highly valued in regional industries including agriculture, oil and gas, healthcare, and education.
