“Richmond's distinguished Baptist HBCU — Virginia Union Panthers community with 160-year heritage and strong theological tradition.”
Virginia Union University (VUU) is a private Baptist-affiliated HBCU founded in 1865 at the end of the Civil War. Located on an 86-acre campus in Richmond, Virginia, VUU combines its 160-year heritage with bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs across 31 degree programs. Affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, VUU is one of the distinguished historically Black colleges of the Atlantic South, with particular strengths in theology and ministerial preparation. VUU's curriculum spans business, the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, education, and theology, with the distinguished Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology providing graduate theological education. Strong undergraduate programs include business, biology, communication, and political science. Richmond metro proximity provides access to government, healthcare, and corporate employers. Campus life at VUU centers on the Panthers community (and Howie the Panther mascot) in NCAA Division II athletics through the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA). Students live on campus, with extensive opportunities for Divine Nine HBCU Greek life, Baptist faith community, and engagement throughout Richmond. The steel and maroon school colors define athletic identity. With its 160-year Baptist HBCU heritage and Richmond location, VUU offers a distinctive small urban HBCU experience.
