“Maryland only public health, law, and human services university — training the state physicians, lawyers, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers since 1807.”
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is a public research university founded in 1807 as the founding campus of the University System of Maryland — making it one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Located on a 71-acre urban campus on the west side of downtown Baltimore, UMB is the only institution in Maryland exclusively dedicated to health, law, and human services professional education. The university encompasses seven nationally ranked schools — Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the interdisciplinary Graduate School — and offers 97 doctoral, master's, baccalaureate, and certificate programs. With a total enrollment of approximately 6,636 students, UMB is primarily a graduate and professional institution. Approximately 960 undergraduate students are enrolled, primarily in the School of Nursing (BSN) and School of Social Work (BSW) programs, while the remaining 5,676 students pursue graduate and professional degrees. The professional schools are nationally ranked: the School of Pharmacy is consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally, the School of Nursing among the top 10, and the School of Social Work in the top 10% nationally by U.S. News. The School of Medicine is the flagship academic medical center for the state of Maryland. For international students, UMB offers access to exceptional professional health and social science programs in a major mid-Atlantic city. The Baltimore-Washington corridor provides unmatched clinical placement opportunities, research partnerships, and career pathways through the University of Maryland Medical System, National Institutes of Health (just 30 miles away in Bethesda), and federal government agencies. F-1 and J-1 students are supported by the Office of International Services (OIS), and STEM OPT extensions are available for graduates of eligible biomedical and health science research programs.
