“A faithfully Catholic liberal arts college where all students study the same Great Books of Western civilization — with no electives, no lectures, no textbooks.”
Thomas Aquinas College (TAC) is a small, faithful Catholic liberal arts college nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Paula, California. Founded in 1971, the college offers a single, integrated curriculum — a four-year course in the Liberal Arts — that requires all students to read and discuss the same Great Books of Western civilization, from Plato and Aristotle to Newton, Darwin, and Aquinas himself. There are no electives, no lectures, and no textbooks: all learning takes place through Socratic discussion in small seminars of roughly 20 students, guided by tutors rather than specialist professors. This radical commitment to a unified intellectual formation produces graduates who are notable for their clarity of thought, depth of reasoning, and coherent worldview rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition. The college's tiny size — approximately 566 students — creates an extraordinarily close community where faith, academic life, and social life are deeply integrated. TAC has a second campus in Northampton, Massachusetts (opened 2019) for students who prefer the East Coast setting but want the identical curriculum. The California campus is set among rolling hills and oak woodlands, offering a contemplative, intentionally simple environment. The college ranks #1 in the nation for Social Mobility among Liberal Arts Colleges and #55 overall by US News 2026, a remarkable achievement for an institution of its size and unusual pedagogical model.
