“Branch campus of The Art Institute of Houston in San Antonio that closed September 30, 2023.”
The Art Institute of San Antonio was a branch campus of The Art Institute of Houston, opened in 2010 to serve the south-central Texas market. The San Antonio campus offered associate, bachelor's, and diploma programs in graphic design, interior design, fashion design, fashion merchandising, media arts and animation, photography, digital filmmaking, audio production, culinary arts, baking & pastry, and culinary management — the same broad portfolio offered across the Art Institutes chain. Programs were quarter-based and project-driven, with open admissions and an industry-adjunct teaching model. Like its sister campuses, AI San Antonio operated under the Art Institutes for-profit system originally owned by Education Management Corporation (EDMC), then sold to the Dream Center Foundation in 2017 and ultimately transferred to the nonprofit Education Principle Foundation. The school was a relatively small campus by enrollment, with the Art Institute of Houston as its accreditation parent. Students benefited from San Antonio's growing creative-services and hospitality sectors and the city's tourist-driven culinary industry around the River Walk and Pearl District. AI San Antonio closed permanently on September 30, 2023 alongside the seven other remaining Art Institutes campuses. Students and staff were notified by email on September 22 — the final day of the academic quarter — leaving them only a week's notice to plan transfers or apply for closed-school federal-loan discharge. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has determined the closure to be a Qualifying Event under which students may seek loss-of-tuition relief. The school is permanently closed and is not part of any successor institution. Former students should consult the U.S. Department of Education's closed-school discharge process and the Art Institutes closed-school information page for transcripts.
