“A SUNY public university in Buffalo's vibrant Elmwood Village, offering distinctive programs in art conservation, fashion technology, forensic science, and education at an accessible public cost.”
Buffalo State University (BSU), officially the State University of New York College at Buffalo State, is a public liberal arts and professional campus within the SUNY system founded in 1871 as the Buffalo Normal School. Located in Buffalo's Elmwood Village neighborhood — one of the city's most culturally rich and walkable districts — BSU sits on a 125-acre urban campus and enrolls approximately 5,100 students across 79 undergraduate majors and 64 graduate programs. As a comprehensive teaching-focused SUNY campus, Buffalo State offers an accessible, career-oriented education at public in-state tuition rates, with 90% of students receiving some form of financial aid. Buffalo State's academic identity is built around its unique combination of traditional liberal arts and sciences alongside highly specialized professional programs that exist nowhere else in the SUNY system. The School of the Professions is home to nationally distinctive programs in Art Conservation, Fashion and Textile Technology, Forensic Chemistry, Wood/Furniture Design, and Communication Design. The School of Education is one of Western New York's primary teacher preparation institutions, producing licensed educators for elementary, childhood, and exceptional education settings. The School of Arts and Sciences covers the full spectrum from biology, chemistry, and mathematics to criminal justice, psychology, and creative arts. Buffalo State also houses two of Western New York's most prominent cultural venues: the Burchfield Penney Art Center — one of the region's premier art museums — and Rockwell Hall, a performing arts center hosting nationally touring productions. Campus life at Buffalo State is shaped by both its urban surroundings and its strong community of first-generation and commuter-friendly students. The Elmwood Village neighborhood just outside campus gates offers independent restaurants, galleries, coffee shops, and arts spaces, while downtown Buffalo is a short drive away. The city itself is undergoing a significant cultural and architectural renaissance, drawing attention for its Frank Lloyd Wright heritage buildings, the newly expanded Albright Knox Gundlach art museum, and proximity to Niagara Falls just 30 minutes north. NCAA Division III Bengals compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Liberty League, and more than 100 student clubs and organizations enrich campus life for this diverse community.
