Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a public regional university located in Nacogdoches, Texas, the oldest town in Texas. Founded in 1923, SFA was established to serve the educational needs of the East Texas region and has since grown into a comprehensive university offering more than 80 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs across colleges of Liberal and Applied Arts, Business, Education, Fine Arts, Forestry and Agriculture, and Sciences and Mathematics. With an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 9,100 students, SFA is known for its personalized approach to education, small class sizes, and strong sense of community. The university's Lumberjacks athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Western Athletic Conference, with strong programs in football, baseball, and basketball. The campus spans over 400 acres of East Texas pine country and is home to the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, one of only a handful of NIFA-accredited forestry programs in the nation. SFA boasts vibrant campus life with more than 200 student organizations, active Greek life, and the historic Stone Fort Museum. The university's natural setting, including Lanana Creek Trail and the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, provides a unique backdrop for student life in the Piney Woods region of Texas. In 2023, SFA became part of the University of Texas System, expanding resources and opportunities for its students.
