“Private Catholic Benedictine university in Florida serving on-campus, online, and military learners”
Saint Leo University is a private, not-for-profit Catholic university in Saint Leo, Florida, founded on June 4, 1889 by Benedictine monks from Saint Vincent Archabbey in Pennsylvania. It is the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in Florida and remains affiliated with Saint Leo Abbey and the Holy Name Monastery on the same 186-acre campus about 35 miles north of Tampa. The university enrolls roughly 16,000 students across its University Campus, more than 40 education centers, and one of the largest online programs in the southeastern United States, offering 95+ undergraduate majors and 50+ graduate and doctoral programs. Academically, Saint Leo organizes its offerings into four schools: the College of Arts, Sciences, and Allied Services; the Tapia College of Business; the School of Education & Social Services; and the School of Health Professions. The university is best known for its programs in criminal justice (one of the largest in the country by enrollment), business administration, cybersecurity, psychology, sport business, and theology. Saint Leo fields 19 NCAA Division II athletic teams, the Lions, and its Benedictine identity — hospitality, community, and service — runs through a Monarch Scholar Honors Program, an active Campus Ministry, and the weekly Mass schedule at the Abbey Church. Saint Leo is particularly attractive for international students because of its combination of small-campus community, religious-values programming, and unusually accessible entry points. More than 550 international students from over 100 countries are enrolled, supported by a dedicated Office of International Services. Undergraduate direct entry requires only TOEFL 71 iBT or IELTS 6.0, and students who fall below those thresholds (down to TOEFL 45 / IELTS 5.0) can begin study through the Bridge Program. The International Student Grant awards $3,000-$14,000 per year based on academic profile, and the university's test-optional policy plus $0 application fee for international applicants make Saint Leo one of the more open doors for students pivoting to a U.S. degree.
