Rio Hondo College is a public community college located in Whittier, California, founded in 1960 and serving the San Gabriel Valley communities of Whittier, Santa Fe Springs, Downey, Norwalk, and surrounding areas. The college's Roadrunner mascot was named in 1963 to honor the native roadrunners of the Puente Hills where the campus was built. With nearly 25,000 students, Rio Hondo offers comprehensive transfer, career technical education, and workforce programs through the Rio Hondo Community College District. The Roadrunners compete in 14 intercollegiate sports through the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) in the South Coast Conference. As a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Rio Hondo is deeply committed to serving the diverse communities of the eastern Los Angeles metropolitan area. The college maintains strong transfer pathways to Cal State Long Beach, Cal State LA, UC campuses, and private universities, and its healthcare, public safety, and automotive technology programs are closely aligned with regional employer needs.
