“Hands-on learning in the heart of the Adirondacks, where nature is your classroom.”
Paul Smith's College of Arts and Science is a unique private institution nestled in the Adirondack Park in upstate New York — the only four-year college located entirely within the 6-million-acre park. Founded in 1946, the college has built a distinctive identity around hands-on, experiential learning in the natural environment. With a 14,000-acre campus — one of the largest in the world by land area — students gain direct access to forests, lakes, wetlands, and wilderness areas that serve as living laboratories for environmental and natural resource studies. The Adirondacks themselves are the curriculum, and fieldwork is embedded into virtually every program. Academic strengths center on natural resources and conservation, forestry, wildlife and fisheries science, culinary arts and hospitality, environmental studies, and outdoor recreation management. The college offers 17 bachelor's degree programs and 7 associate programs, all with strong experiential components. With fewer than 1,000 students, class sizes are intimate and faculty are highly accessible, fostering close mentoring relationships that carry students from the classroom directly into careers. A dedicated graduate program in disaster response management is also offered for post-baccalaureate students. Beyond academics, Paul Smith's cultivates an outdoor-immersive campus culture that includes 14 varsity and co-ed sports — among them ice hockey, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, biathlon, and the storied Woodsmen Team competition. Student clubs focus on adventure sports, fishing, hunting, ecological restoration, and Adirondack wilderness skills. Students who thrive in nature-connected environments and seek meaningful careers in conservation, sustainability, food systems, or outdoor leadership will find Paul Smith's a genuinely singular institution.
