“Iowa's standout Christian college — where faith, scholarship, and community transform lives.”
Northwestern College (NWC) is a private Christian liberal arts college in Orange City, Iowa, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Founded in 1882, Northwestern has built a reputation as a vibrant academic community where Reformed, evangelical, and ecumenical Christian values shape every dimension of student life. The 100-acre campus is located a few blocks south of Orange City's downtown and features a distinctive campus green flanked by modern academic buildings, a music hall, Christ Chapel (seating 900), and the DeWitt Family Science Center — more than $50 million has been invested in campus improvements since 2013. With approximately 1,715 students across undergraduate and graduate programs, NWC offers the resources of a comprehensive college with the community feel of a smaller institution. Northwestern's academic program spans 135+ majors and minors across the liberal arts, sciences, and professional programs. Business is the most popular area of study (21% of graduates), followed by Elementary Education (12%) and Nursing (8%). The college's nursing program, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), admits up to 30 new candidates per year. Education programs cover elementary, secondary, and special education across multiple content areas, and science programs are housed in the state-of-the-art DeWitt Family Science Center. A 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures personalized mentorship throughout each student's academic journey. Campus life at Northwestern is energetic, faith-filled, and community-driven. More than half the student body competes on intercollegiate athletic teams, and the Red Raiders have claimed 10 NAIA national championship titles competing in the highly competitive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Fifty-plus clubs and organizations span everything from mission projects to student government to music ensembles. Beloved traditions including the Clash of the Classes, the Hospers Hall Cardboard and Duct Tape Battle, and the monthly Flapjack Friday Eve reflect a community that balances academic seriousness with genuine joy. About 3% of students represent 23 different countries, bringing international perspectives to campus life.
