“America's Environmental Liberal Arts College — founded 1892, permanently closed May 2025.”
Northland College was a private, nonprofit liberal arts college located in Ashland, Wisconsin, on the south shore of Lake Superior. Founded in 1892 and celebrated as America's Environmental Liberal Arts College, Northland pioneered the integration of environmental education with traditional liberal arts — the first college in the country to build sustainability and ecological thinking into the core of every academic program. Students came for its unique blend of rigorous academics and outdoor immersion, with Lake Superior, old-growth forests, and wilderness areas serving as extended classrooms for ecology, conservation, geology, and outdoor education. Northland's academic culture prized hands-on experiential learning. The Mary Griggs Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation gave students and faculty access to cutting-edge research tools, while partnerships with nearby Native American tribes enriched programs in Indigenous studies, history, and language. The college's small enrollment — typically under 500 students — meant close mentorship, very low student-to-faculty ratios, and a tight-knit community. Popular majors included biology, natural resources and conservation, outdoor education, environmental science, and Native American studies. All majors incorporated what the college called 'green skills' alongside graduate-level research opportunities. Despite its distinctive mission and passionate alumni community, Northland faced mounting financial pressure from declining enrollment and rising operational costs endemic to small rural liberal arts institutions. After a $12 million emergency fundraising campaign fell short and a final reorganization effort did not yield a sustainable path forward, the Board of Trustees announced closure in February 2025. Northland College held its last commencement ceremony on May 24, 2025, and permanently closed after 133 years — leaving behind a legacy as a national leader in environmental higher education.
