Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) is a public coeducational maritime college located on a 35-acre peninsula campus in Castine, Maine, on Penobscot Bay. Founded in 1941, MMA enrolls approximately 945 undergraduate students across programs in marine transportation, marine engineering, ocean studies, and business, with unrivaled career outcomes: the 10-year median earnings for MMA graduates is $100,300 — among the highest of any college in the United States — and 90% of graduates are employed within 90 days of graduation. Maine Maritime is one of only six state maritime academies authorized to prepare students for unlimited U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Marine Officer licenses. The academy operates the Training Ship State of Maine (TSSOM), a full-size training vessel on which all license-track students complete mandatory sea training cruises with international ports of call. Students in USCG license programs participate in the Regiment of Midshipmen — a structured residential system with uniforms and disciplined campus life — and complete mandatory cadet shipping internships aboard commercial vessels after their sophomore year. MMA is ranked #7 among Regional Colleges North and #2 for Best Colleges for Veterans by U.S. News & World Report, and the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce places MMA among the top 10 U.S. colleges for return on investment — outperforming Harvard in lifetime earnings relative to cost. The remote Castine campus fosters intense camaraderie and purpose-driven community.
