Lincoln Memorial University is a private university founded in 1897 in Harrogate, Tennessee, on a 1,000-acre campus that borders Cumberland Gap National Historical Park where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. LMU was established as a living memorial to President Abraham Lincoln — brought into being at the urging of Union General Oliver O. Howard to serve the loyal Union families of the southern Appalachians — and that heritage still defines the university's identity, anchored by the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, one of the country's most significant collections of Civil War and Lincoln-era artifacts. The motto 'We Wear His Name Proudly' captures a mission of access, public service, and education for the Appalachian region. The university houses the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Richard A.
