“Private university bordering Cumberland Gap National Historical Park”
Lincoln Memorial University is a private university founded in 1897 in Harrogate, Tennessee, on a 1,000-acre campus that borders Cumberland Gap National Historical Park where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. LMU was established as a living memorial to President Abraham Lincoln — brought into being at the urging of Union General Oliver O. Howard to serve the loyal Union families of the southern Appalachians — and that heritage still defines the university's identity, anchored by the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, one of the country's most significant collections of Civil War and Lincoln-era artifacts. The motto 'We Wear His Name Proudly' captures a mission of access, public service, and education for the Appalachian region. Academically, LMU has grown into a doctoral-level institution best known for its professional health science and legal programs. The university houses the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (with a second site at Orange Park, Florida), the College of Dental Medicine, the Caylor School of Nursing, and the Duncan School of Law in Knoxville. Undergraduate study is organized around the Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions, the School of Business, the School of Engineering, and the Carter and Moyers School of Education, together serving roughly 1,700 undergraduates and more than 3,400 graduate and professional students. Student life at LMU is shaped by its striking mountain setting: students hike and camp in the Cumberland Gap, ski and climb in the nearby Appalachians, and participate in the university's long-running Mountain Heritage Literary Festival. The Railsplitters compete in NCAA Division II's South Atlantic Conference across 21 varsity sports. For international students, LMU offers a comparatively small, rural campus with direct pipelines into veterinary, medical, dental, and legal education, wraparound student services including counseling, career development, residential life, and accessibility support, and a tight-knit community rooted in Appalachian culture and Lincoln's legacy of opportunity.
