“A proud HBCU in the heart of Memphis, dedicated to empowering students through a transformative liberal arts education rooted in community, culture, and service.”
LeMoyne-Owen College is a historically Black college and university (HBCU) located in Memphis, Tennessee. Its roots reach back to 1862 through two predecessor institutions: Le Moyne College, founded in 1870 by the American Missionary Association, and Owen College, established by the Baptist Church for the education of freed Black Americans. The two colleges merged in 1968 to form LeMoyne-Owen College, which today stands as one of Memphis's most important engines of higher education and social mobility. The college is a proud member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). With a total enrollment of approximately 646 students, LeMoyne-Owen delivers an intimate academic environment where faculty know students by name and class sizes allow for direct, personalized instruction. The college offers 21 majors and 19 minors across disciplines including the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, business, and interdisciplinary studies. Popular programs include Interdisciplinary Studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, and Biology. A strong Career Services office helps graduates chart professional and graduate school pathways in an evolving workforce. LeMoyne-Owen's 15-acre urban campus sits in the heart of Memphis — a city celebrated as the birthplace of the blues, a cornerstone of the American civil rights movement, and home to a growing healthcare and logistics sector. The campus proximity to major employers, hospitals, and civic organizations gives students excellent access to internships and community engagement opportunities. Steeped in HBCU tradition, the college hosts Homecoming celebrations, cultural events, and student organizations that honor Black history, identity, and achievement year-round.
