“A liberal arts college built around the K-Plan — an individualized approach that integrates study abroad, career development, research, and civic engagement into every four-year experience.”
Kalamazoo College — known simply as "K" — is one of the 100 oldest colleges in the United States, founded in 1833 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. What distinguishes K from most liberal arts colleges is the K-Plan: a distinctive and nationally recognized approach to liberal arts education that integrates rigorous academic study with study abroad, career development experiences, civic engagement, and a senior individualized project (SIP) into each student's four-year experience. Virtually all students study abroad at least once, with 85%+ participating in international programs. This commitment to global experiential learning, combined with close faculty mentorship (11:1 ratio) and a personalized curriculum, produces graduates who are unusually well-prepared for both graduate school and professional careers. K's 60-acre campus sits in a historic Kalamazoo neighborhood, walking distance to downtown galleries, restaurants, and cultural venues. Kalamazoo's vibrant arts scene, Craft Brewery Row, and outdoor recreation opportunities along the Kalamazoo River give students a rich off-campus life. The college has a strong international student community and offers both merit and need-based aid to international applicants, including the Global Leadership Scholarship which can cover full tuition costs.

K's signature educational model integrates academic study with study abroad, career development experience (internship/externship), civic engagement, and the Senior Individualized Project (SIP — a year-long independent research or creative work). All students complete each component as part of their degree.

Strong pre-medical and research preparation. The SIP requirement means Biology graduates have completed genuine independent research — a significant advantage for medical school and graduate program applications.
