Governors State University (GSU) is a public university founded in 1969 in University Park, Illinois, located approximately 30 miles south of Chicago in the Chicago Southland region. Originally established as an upper-division and graduate institution serving working adults and transfer students, GSU began admitting freshmen in 2014 and has since grown into a comprehensive regional university. GSU enrolls approximately 4,300 students across undergraduate and graduate programs and is recognized as one of the most diverse universities in Illinois. International students represent 14% of enrollment, with the majority in graduate programs in business, healthcare, education, and social work. GSU's Jaguars compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The university is affiliated with three regional hospital and healthcare networks, providing strong clinical and career opportunities in health professions. GSU is particularly noted for its commitment to serving first-generation college students, adult learners, and underrepresented communities in the Chicago Southland. The College of Health and Human Services is among the university's largest and most prominent academic divisions.
