“Oregon's largest private university, a Christ-centered Quaker-founded institution in Newberg with 80+ programs.”
George Fox University is a nationally recognized Christ-centered university in Newberg, Oregon — about 23 miles southwest of Portland — and the largest private university in the state. Founded in 1891 out of a Quaker-affiliated academy (its most famous early attendee was future U.S. president Herbert Hoover), George Fox is affiliated today with Evangelical Friends and makes faith integration a core part of the academic experience. The university has grown dramatically in recent years, setting back-to-back record enrollments and cresting 4,300 students across Newberg, Portland, and Redmond campuses, with a record 2,488 undergraduates in Fall 2025. Academically, George Fox offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and 21 graduate programs. The engineering program is especially notable — US News has ranked it the top Christian-college undergraduate engineering program in the West — and the university is also known for strong programs in nursing, education, business, psychology, and Christian ministries. The student-faculty ratio is 17:1 and the university operates on a traditional semester calendar, with small class sizes that make close relationships with professors the norm rather than the exception. George Fox's 'Be Known' promise — that every student will be known personally, academically, and spiritually — is more than marketing; it is the operating principle of the entire campus. Life at George Fox blends outdoor Pacific Northwest energy with a tight-knit Christian community. The 108-acre tree-lined campus sits next to the Hess Creek Canyon and is an easy drive to Portland, the Oregon coast, and Mt. Hood. Students get involved in more than 50 clubs, NCAA Division III athletics (Bruins), chapel and discipleship groups, Serve Trips, and distinctive traditions such as Bruin Brawl (a campus-wide capture the flag) and the annual Serve Day of community service. The university is a good fit for students who want a faith-shaped undergraduate experience, genuinely small classes, and direct access to a large metro area's internships and graduate programs.
