“Florida's only public HBCU and the nation's #1 ranked public HBCU — known for pharmacy, engineering, business and the celebrated Marching 100.”
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public historically Black, land-grant research university in Tallahassee, Florida. Founded on October 3, 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students, it is Florida's only public HBCU and the third-largest historically Black university in the United States by enrollment. FAMU is consistently ranked the #1 public HBCU in the country by U.S. News & World Report and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an R2 'High Research Activity' doctoral institution. The university comprises 13 schools and colleges and one institute, with particular national strength in pharmacy, engineering, business, and architecture. The College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences is the only U.S. pharmacy program with a fully accredited Institute of Public Health, offering PharmD, BS, MS, and PhD degrees. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering — established by the Florida Legislature in 1982 — is the only shared engineering college in the nation, jointly operated with Florida State University and producing one of the largest groups of African American engineering graduates in the U.S. The School of Business and Industry (SBI), founded in 1974, is renowned for its five-year combined BS/MBA professional development model that places graduates into Fortune 500 firms. FAMU's culture is shaped by its land-grant mission of access and uplift, an unusually tight alumni network ('FAMUly'), and a celebrated student life anchored by the Marching '100' band — one of the most influential collegiate marching bands in the world. International students are supported through the Office of International Education and Development and the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) unit; the campus hosts students from more than 45 countries on a 422-acre campus on the highest of Tallahassee's seven hills, just steps from the Florida State Capitol.
