“Public R2 research university in Ypsilanti with eight colleges and origins as the first normal school outside New England.”
Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is a public doctoral university in Ypsilanti, Michigan, founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School — the fourth teacher-training institution in the United States and the first established outside New England. It became the nation's first four-year normal school in 1899 and was elevated to university status in 1959. Today EMU enrolls roughly 13,500 students across 200+ undergraduate majors and 150+ graduate programs organized into eight colleges, including a named GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, a College of Business, a nationally recognized College of Education, and a College of Health and Human Services whose nursing, occupational therapy, and clinical programs serve the Detroit-Ann Arbor medical corridor. Academic life at EMU is defined by access, applied learning, and a long-standing commitment to first-generation and international students. Classes average 24 students and are taught by faculty (not TAs), and the university runs a nationally regarded Honors College for high-achieving undergraduates who want seminar-size coursework within a mid-size public university. EMU's programs in cybersecurity, information assurance, special education, language and literacy, and autism spectrum disorders are widely referenced by peer institutions, and the university's GameAbove gift has accelerated investment in engineering and computing. EMU is one of the few U.S. public universities that charges international undergraduate students the in-state tuition rate, making it among the most affordable four-year research-active universities in the Midwest for students on an F-1 visa. Beyond the classroom, the 800-acre campus in Ypsilanti sits inside Washtenaw County, eight miles from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and thirty minutes from Detroit Metro Airport. The Division I Eagles compete in the Mid-American Conference, and the Student Center, Rec/IM, and McKenny Hall anchor more than 300 student organizations plus a vibrant international community with more than 30 country and cultural clubs. For international students, the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) coordinates orientation, immigration advising, and CPT/OPT processing, and the on-campus Intensive English Program (IEP) provides a pathway for students who do not yet meet English proficiency thresholds.
