D'Youville University is a private Catholic university in Buffalo, New York, founded in 1908 by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart as the first college chartered to award baccalaureate degrees to women in Western New York. Named for Saint Marguerite d'Youville, Canada's first native-born saint, the school became coeducational in 1971 and officially transitioned from 'D'Youville College' to 'D'Youville University' in 2023. Today D'Youville enrolls approximately 3,000 students (about 1,260 undergraduates plus a large professional/graduate cohort) on a compact urban campus on Buffalo's West Side, overlooking the Niagara River and walking distance from downtown Buffalo and the Canadian border. Academically, D'Youville is almost entirely a health-professions university. Its programs are organized across four schools — the Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Health Professions (housing chiropractic, exercise & sports studies, health administration, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant), and the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education — and it has recently added a College of Osteopathic Medicine awarding the DO degree. The Pharm.D. program offers both three-year in-person and online pathways and has been nationally recognized for residency match rates; the Garman School of Nursing offers BSN, accelerated BSN, RN-to-BSN, MS, FNP, PMHNP, and DNP tracks; and the graduate health-professions programs (DPT, OT, PA) are among Western New York's most competitive. For international students, D'Youville's draws are its heavy health-professions orientation (highly employable degrees in pharmacy, nursing, and allied health), Buffalo's exceptionally low cost of living, and proximity to the Canadian border — Toronto is about 90 minutes away, making D'Youville particularly popular with Canadian and international applicants seeking a US health-professions degree. Admission is test-optional for undergraduates, and the university uses rolling admissions with fast decisions (often within 24 hours of a complete application). The Saints compete in NCAA Division II, and campus life is anchored by community-service traditions rooted in the university's Catholic, Vincentian heritage.
