“The only accredited college in America where every full-time student earns their tuition through work, graduating completely debt-free.”
Founded in 1906 as a school for deserving Ozarks youth, College of the Ozarks, nicknamed Hard Work U, is a private Christian liberal arts college in Point Lookout, Missouri that operates on one of the most distinctive models in American higher education: no tuition in exchange for work. Every full-time student works 15 hours per week at one of more than 80 on-campus work stations and completes two 40-hour work weeks during semester breaks, earning their way through college entirely debt-free. The 1,000-acre campus overlooks Lake Taneycomo 40 miles south of Springfield and is home to a working dairy farm, a professional-grade restaurant and lodge known as the Keeter Center, a craft kitchen producing nationally famous fruitcakes and jellies since 1934, and the Ralph Foster Museum of Ozark heritage. No other institution in the country integrates vocational education and financial self-sufficiency so seamlessly into the undergraduate experience. The college organizes its mission around five pillars: Academic, Christian, Patriotic, Cultural, and Vocational development. This values-centered framework shapes everything from chapel attendance and patriotic observances to the selection of a student body that reflects genuine financial need alongside academic merit. With approximately 1,450 students, class sizes are small and faculty relationships are close. Ranked No. 3 in Regional Colleges Midwest and No. 1 for Social Mobility by U.S. News and World Report 2026, C of O is exceptionally selective for its size: only about 15% of applicants are admitted, and the college prioritizes students who are both academically prepared and in genuine financial need of the work-tuition model. For international students, College of the Ozarks offers a culturally immersive, deeply American small-college experience in the heart of the Ozarks. While the international community is intentionally small (approximately 25 students), those admitted participate in the same work-education program as domestic peers, living and working alongside American classmates in an environment that emphasizes character, service, and practical skill. The nearby town of Branson, Missouri, provides access to arts, entertainment venues, and a thriving local economy that supplements the campus work experience.
