California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), located in Vallejo, California on the shores of San Francisco Bay, is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States and one of the smallest CSU campuses with approximately 761 undergraduates. As of July 1, 2025, Cal Maritime operates as a satellite campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo while maintaining its full programs and distinctive culture. Cal Maritime offers seven undergraduate degree programs in marine transportation, marine engineering technology, global studies and maritime affairs, and oceanography, with unrivaled career outcomes: the 10-year median earnings for Cal Maritime graduates is $94,784 — among the highest of any public undergraduate institution in California — and 98% of graduates are employed within six months of graduation. All students participate in the Corps of Cadets, a regimented residential system requiring uniforms, morning formations, and structured campus life. A highlight of the Cal Maritime experience is the annual summer sea cruise aboard the USTS Golden Bear, a 500-foot training ship, where students earn hands-on sea time required for U.S. Coast Guard licensing. Graduates pursuing Marine Transportation are eligible for the Third Mate U.S. Merchant Marine Officer License with STCW certification, and may be commissioned as Strategic Sealift Officers in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The waterfront 80-acre campus provides direct access to San Francisco Bay and is located 30 miles north of San Francisco.
