“A small Baptist university in the Mississippi hill country where faith, academic excellence, and close community have shaped transformative graduates since 1873.”
Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) is a private Baptist institution founded in 1873 in Blue Mountain, Mississippi—a small rural town in the foothills of the Appalachian range between the cities of Ripley and New Albany. Originally established as Blue Mountain Female Institute by Confederate General and Baptist minister Mark Perrin Lowrey, the college became coeducational in 2005 and was officially renamed Blue Mountain Christian University in November 2022. With a total enrollment of approximately 919 students on a 190-acre campus, BMCU is one of the most intimate Christian liberal arts institutions in the mid-South, offering a 13:1 student-faculty ratio where 81% of classes have fewer than 20 students. True to its Baptist heritage, BMCU integrates Christian faith throughout all academic programs. Weekly chapel is a cherished community tradition, and Bible/Biblical Studies remains a signature academic offering alongside mainstream fields such as elementary education, business administration, exercise science, psychology, and criminal justice. The university confers bachelor's degrees in arts, science, education, and music education, with an accelerated nursing track and select graduate programs in education. BMCU is particularly recognized for teacher preparation programs that are highly regarded by schools throughout the mid-South region. Campus life at Blue Mountain Christian University is characterized by close community bonds, athletic participation, and faith-centered traditions. Many international students are recruited through varsity athletics programs. Nationally recognized as one of the top Regional Colleges in the South (ranked #16 by US News 2026), BMCU's commitment to personal mentorship, spiritual formation, and academic rigor creates a distinctively formative undergraduate experience for students seeking a faith-integrated education. The Toppers compete in the NAIA across more than a dozen varsity sports.
