“North Dakota Polytechnic Institution — $6,237 in-state tuition, nationally recognized energy and cybersecurity programs, and open admissions make BSC one of the most accessible technical colleges in the Midwest.”
Bismarck State College (BSC) is a public polytechnic institution established in 1939, located on a 120-acre suburban campus in Bismarck, North Dakota — the state capital. As North Dakota's Polytechnic Institution and the third-largest college in the North Dakota University System, BSC serves approximately 4,200 undergraduates with a comprehensive mix of technical programs, transfer pathways, online courses, and a growing suite of bachelor of applied science degrees. BSC has earned national recognition for specialized programs that few institutions in the country can match. The National Energy Center of Excellence (NECE) is home to 12 energy industry degree and training programs, including unique offerings in nuclear power technology, oil and gas production technology, electric power technology, wind energy, and solar energy — disciplines that feed directly into North Dakota high-wage energy sector employment. In cybersecurity, the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have jointly designated BSC as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE), recognizing the quality and rigor of its information technology and cybersecurity curriculum. For international students, BSC is one of the most affordable paths into the U.S. higher education system, with out-of-state/international tuition of just $8,842 per year — a fraction of typical private and flagship university costs. A limited International Tuition Waiver reducing tuition by 50% (to approximately $4,421/year) is available to 3-5 F-1 students annually. BSC is transitioning from a primarily two-year college to a four-year institution and is expected to join the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Frontier Conference beginning in 2025-26. TOEFL submission is optional (though recommended) for international applicants.
