·Public Community College
Allan Hancock College is a public community college located in Santa Maria, California, serving the Santa Barbara County north coast including Santa Maria, Lompoc, and the Santa Ynez Valley. Founded in 1920 as Santa Maria Junior College, making it one of the oldest community colleges in California, the college was renamed in 1954 to honor Allan Hancock, an aviator, musician, and philanthropist who donated the land for the campus. Today, Allan Hancock College serves approximately 11,000 students across four locations—Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley, and Vandenberg Space Force Base—in associate degree, certificate, and noncredit programs spanning liberal arts, sciences, business, health sciences, technology, public safety, and career technical education. The Bulldogs athletic program competes in the Western State Conference and California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), with intercollegiate teams in football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, swimming, water polo, cross country, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. Allan Hancock College has an especially strong reputation for its aviation maintenance technology program, situated conveniently near Santa Maria Public Airport, as well as for its theater arts, nursing, and automotive technology offerings. The college serves a predominantly first-generation and Hispanic student population and has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). With some of the lowest tuition rates in the nation and a welcoming campus atmosphere on California's scenic Central Coast, Allan Hancock College provides vital educational access to the region's diverse communities.
